Think of watts as how fast water leaves a tap. A kWh is how much “water” was used over time. This is an estimate, not a bill guarantee.

The tiny answer

Watts tell you how quickly an appliance uses electricity. Hours tell you how long it runs. Your price per kWh tells you what that energy costs.

watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × price

Worked example

A 1,000W appliance used for 2 hours uses 2kWh. At an example rate of 25p per kWh, that is about 50p for the day.

Use the unit price shown on your own tariff for a more relevant estimate.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate an appliance electricity cost?

Divide watts by 1,000, multiply by hours used, then multiply the result by your electricity price per kWh.

Is the result the same as my electricity bill?

No. It is an estimate based on the numbers you enter. Real use can change as appliances cycle on and off.

What is a kWh?

A kilowatt-hour is an amount of energy. A 1,000 watt appliance running for one hour uses 1 kWh.
